DONE DEAL: RICKY CAPS 250cc SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP WITH VICTORY IN VEGAS
Ricky cements his second 250cc Supercross title.
| Although Rickys victory in Salt Lake City secured a second consecutive EA Supercross title, his victory and subsequent crowning this weekend in Vegas caps a triumphant come-from-behind season. Back in January, the 22-year-old Florida native was primed and ready to make a run for a second consecutive 250cc title at the seasons first race in Anaheim. Those hopes were checked by a scary, over-the-bars crash that left RC dazed and with a DNF (did not finish) in his very first race. The DNF put Ricky squarely in last place. |
| Carmichael had suffered a mild concussion, and, more than that, a blow to his confidence. Timing and concentration off, he claimed fourth in his next two races, in San Diego and Anaheim. But all questions as to whether Ricky could put his mind back in the game were squashed when he returned to form in Phoenix, clinching his first victory and first podium finish of the season. Ricky was back. |
 Let the corks fly.
| The race for the 250cc Supercross title then evolved into a duel between Ricky and his nearest competitor in points, Dave Vuillemin. But Ricky had overcome his nerve-rattling injury. He racked up a string of consecutive firsts, interrupted only twice by second place finishes. Rickys final 2002 EA Supercross breakdown: one DNF, two fourth-place finishes, two second-place finishes, and eleven wins. Ricky also set an unusual record this season: hes the first Supercross rider in history to go from last to first place in the series standings. |
| Rickys now gearing up for the AMA US Motocross series, which kicks off in San Bernardino, CA, this Sunday. Tune in to watch the Vegas race its available on pay-per-view, and shows on ESPN2 on Saturday, May 11 at 12 p.m. Check the listings below for pay-per-view encore presentations; all times are Eastern. |

Left: The checkered is waved and Ricky launches. Right: The number-one plate, for the second year in a row.
| Rickys win at Salt Lake City last weekend, his tenth this season, secured his second consecutive 250cc Supercross championship. The Dallas Supercross is airing on ESPN2 on Saturday, April 27, at noon, Eastern time. |

RICKY CARMICHAEL FIGHTS FOR SILVER IN DETROIT
Three races left to go ...
| When the dust (or mud) settled last Saturday night in Detroit, Ricky Carmichael emerged with the silver, finishing just behind Honda teammate Nate Ramsey. It was a tough battle Ricky worked his way into second, and was pushing so hard that he suffered a tough crash. Ricky regained his footing and fought his way up from 19th to regain second place, passing everyone in the pack except Ramsey. When the checkered was waved, Ricky crossed the finish line in second, visor hanging off his helmet and with what appeared to be bent handlebars. There are now three races left to go in the season before a new Supercross champion is crowned Dallas, Salt Lake City, and Las Vegas. As the race for the Supercross championship heats up, Ricky is still the overall points leader, with 281, but is closely pursued by Dave Vuillemin, with 257 points, in the number-two spot. |

RICKY CARMICHAEL: FIRST IN FLORIDA, AN ESPN MAGAZINE STORY, AND A NEW INTERVIEW
 Making Floridians proud.
| Ricky Carmichael has had a busy week. To start things off, he claimed the gold in Daytona, a notoriously difficult stop in the Supercross series, infamous for both the extended length of the race and the tricky sand elements on the course. The March 9 win catapults Ricky into the lead in the Supercross points standings, and makes him the main contender for the championship, which would be his second in a row. Catch a repeat showing of the Daytona race on Speed Channel, broadcast Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. |
The opening spread for Ricky's article in ESPN The Magazine.
| Ricky is also the subject of a personality piece in the latest ESPN magazine, on newsstands now. The story focuses on the things that have kept Ricky grounded during both his wildly successful 2001 season, in which he won the Supercross championship and smashed many existing motocross records, and the current, more tumultuous 2002 season, which started off with Ricky suffering a mild concussion in the very first race. Look for the four-page article in the March 18 issue. |
| Finally, Ricky has been nominated for Rider of the Year at The ESPN Action Sports and Music Awards. The show, to be held on April 13, honors skate, surf, snow, BMX, and MX athletes, and the musicians who inspire them, for their achievements over the past year.
