DYRDEK AND KALIS RACE IN GUMBALL 3000 RALLY

Rob and Josh behind the wheel.
Launched in 1999, the Gumball 3000 has gained a reputation as Europe's most notorious and high profile rally race. This year the Gumball made its way to the US, and Josh Kalis and Rob Dyrdek joined a motley cast in the high-speed rally race from New York City to Los Angeles. From April 25 to April 30, the two DC riders dropped the hammer in Joshs BMW M5, and joined packs of souped-up driving machines as they roared over the freeways of America.

Josh (in silver M5) and other Gumballers gas up.
Days were spent trying to avoid the law and racing to the next nights over-the-top party, held at upscale locations in New York City, Nashville, Dallas, Santa Fe, Las Vegas and, finally, at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. Rob and Josh emerged from the ordeal, eyes sunken and hollow from non-stop driving. Look for the full story of the five-day adventure in an upcoming issue of TransWorld STANCE magazine well keep you posted as to when its available at shops and newsstands. STEVIE IN VIBE MAGAZINE

The new Vibe: get it while it's hot.
Stevie Williams shines in the latest issue of Vibe magazine. In a four-page story in one of Americas largest hip-hop magazines, Stevie talks about how hes living Martin Luther Kings dream through skateboarding: Here I am skating with blacks, whites, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Japanese [skaters]. And we all come together for one common cause skateboarding. If you arent a regular reader of Vibe, be sure to pick up the June 2002 issue to check the story and photos.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT DANNYS RECORD-BREAKING EVENT

Danny, dwarfed by the roll-in. Check out the slideshow to see the rest of the ramps.
On April 16 and 17, Danny Way broke first the world record for longest air, and then the record for highest air on the same ramp. On April 16, he set a new distance record of 65 feet, after dropping down a 49-foot-tall roll-in to launch off a jump ramp and onto a landing ramp; the landing ramp sloped down and into a 20-foot-tall quarterpipe. The following day, Danny backside 360d the gap, and then stretched out a backside air on the quarterpipe that measured 18 feet, three inches.
Now you can go behind the scenes and see the superstructure constructed specifically for the event. Click here to see photos of the ramp and of Danny.
We cant show actual photos of Danny skating yet, because he filmed his record-breaking feats for a pay-per-view event called King of Skate, in which Danny, Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Mike Vallely, Geoff Rowley, and Eric Koston invent and perform their own stunts, competing for a $25,000 prize. The winner will be crowned when the event premieres on June 28. For more info, visit kingofskate.com.

DANNY WAY SETS NEW WORLD RECORD FOR BOTH HIGHEST AND LONGEST AIR

Danny Way is no stranger to world records in 1997 he set the world record for the highest air. Last week, at a windy inland Southern California location, Danny set not one, but two world records, for both the longest and highest air. A course was built specifically for Dannys attack on the record books: a 49-foot-tall roll-in led to a launch ramp with a landing ramp over fifty feet away. The landing ramp then sloped downward and led to a 20-foot-tall quarterpipe. The ramps were set up for Danny to break the world record for longest air, and then hit the quarterpipe to break the record for the highest air.
By the end of the first of two days, Danny had set a new world-record for the longest air with a distance of 65 feet (beating the previous record of 56 feet, set by Brian Patch in 2001, by a total of nine feet). The winds proved too high to break the longest air record and then launch into the highest air he was blown about too much once his airs on the quarterpipe started clearing the 15-foot mark.
The wind settled down by the next day. Danny started doing backside 360s over the 50-foot gap and then hitting the quarterpipe to launch into a world-record high air. He ultimately topped out at 18 feet, three inches shattering his own previous record of 16 feet, six inches.
Danny broke both records while filming for a pay-per-view television event called King of Skate, which is pitting six top skaters against each other as they invent and then perform their own stunts for the $25,000 cash prize. Other skaters invited to compete include Bob Burnquist, Tony Hawk, Geoff Rowley, Mike Vallelly, and Eric Koston. The pay-per-view premiere is June 28, but watch for more coverage in coming weeks as the full extent of Dannys achievements becomes known.

Besides conceiving and then pulling off two world records in two days, Dannys also been nominated by TransWorld SKATEboarding for the Best Vert Rider Award at the 4th Annual TransWorld SKATEboarding Awards, taking place Thursday, May 23, at the John Anson Ford Theater in Hollywood, CA. The TransWorld SKATEboarding Awards is a fun and wild show where pros, legends, and innovators get together to acknowledge their peers. To check out more photos of Danny, and an interview with him, visit his page on DC's Web Site by clicking here.

TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR OF DANNY AND COLINS VERT RAMP

The closest you'll get to skating here? Take the tour. Colin McKay, switch ollie to switch nosegrind.
DC previously presented a unique virtual tour of the streetcourse in Danny and Colins Vista warehouse. In another one-of-a-kind look at their skatepark, we again present a virtual tour, this time of the vert ramp. Danny and Colin visualized a ramp that would allow them to push their skating beyond what a regular ramp made possible. The resulting vert ramp is in a class by itself, unlike any other ramp anywhere. Its over 90 feet long, with varying heights of 12-, 13-, and 16-feet, and, in a twist thats never been seen on a vert ramp before, a banked roll-in and a hip. Click on the video link below to get a behind-the-scenes peek at one of skatings most exclusive ramps.

RYAN SMITH INTERVIEW IN NEWEST TRANSWORLD SKATE

Last week, Ryan Smiths page went up on the DC site (if you missed his interview, click here). Adding to his growing coverage, a twelve-page 20 Questions article drops in the new July issue of TransWorld SKATEboarding. Besides the interview, Ryan also has his first-ever ad for DC and a three-page Zero ad, all in the same issue it's a heavy month for the RDS and Zero am. Head down to your local skate shop and start pestering the employees for a copy now.

TIPS FOR SKATE PHOTOGRAPHERS

Mike makes it look easy.
DC photographer Mike Blabac has picked 15 of his favorite photos for a new on-line photo gallery. The gallery comes complete with a brief bio of Mike, comments on each of the photos, and a peek at the contents of Mikes camera bags (if you missed it, click here.). This week, Mike offers technical information on the 15 photos, and has compiled a list of tips for aspiring skate photographers, discussing topics like composition, film stock, and lenses. NEW TF COMPLETED IN DANNY AND COLINS VISTA WAREHOUSE

Imagine if you had a key to this place
Danny and Colin built themselves one of the sickest vert ramps in the world, and tucked it in a warehouse in Vista, California. The warehouse was so big, though, that there was room left over room now filled by a brand-new street course, designed by Rob Dyrdek. Click the video link to take a unique virtual tour of one of the worlds pre-eminent private parks, where Danny, Colin, Rob, and the rest of the DC team will be skating and filming.

DC COMES OUT ON TOP IN STRENGTH READERS' POLL

DC COMES OUT ON TOP IN STRENGTH READERS' POLL The latest issue of Strength magazine features the results of its 2001 Readers' Poll. DC was voted Best Shoe Team, with, according to Strengths editors, its Danny and Colin legacy combined with newer veterans [sic] like Josh, Anthony, and Stevie. Stevies shoe, the Williams, also came out a winner, voted one of the top three shoes of the year, and Rob Dyrdek was singled out for all the work hes been putting in lately, as Strengths readers gave him top honors in the Best Comeback category and nominated him for Best Trick On Film for the 50-50 he did in his commercial. Danny Way came up in Strengths Editors Picks, also, topping the list for 6-Million Dollar Men (We can rebuild him stronger than he already was.) and Been There, Done That (We did that st in 93). To read the rest of the results, and to catch an accompanying spread of Josh Kalis laying down a switch nosebluntslide, check out the April 02 issue of Strength, available at a newsstand or shop near you.

COLIN, DANNY, AND ELLIS GET DOWN WITH LINKIN PARK

L to R: Danny Way, Jason Ellis, Phoenix (Linkin Park), Colin McKay, Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park). Linkin Park on stage at the House of Blues.
Linkin Park capped off their Projekt Revolution tour with a benefit show at the Los Angeles House of Blues last Monday evening, and Colin McKay, Danny Way, and Jason Ellis turned up to show their support. The show was organized by a group of thirteen-year-olds from a local LA-area high school to benefit TrinityKids Care, the first pediatric hospice in LA county. DC donated gear for a pre-show product toss. The audience comprised of nearly all kids went crazy for the shoe certificates, t-shirts, hats, and stickers handed out. The members of Linkin Park signed tons of DC product, and kids freaked out when they recognized Danny Way and Colin McKay. Both DC riders ended up signing autographs, too Danny was even signing shoes.

Colin McKay with two loyal fans.
The show ended early, at 8:30, but it turned into a late night when the members of Linkin Park invited Colin, Danny, and Jason Ellis to party afterward. It was crazy. Kids went nuts at the show. They sang every word to every song, said Colin. Linkin Park shouted us out during the concert, which was very cool. We hung out with them after the show, and thats where things got pretty out of hand. It was a great time, and we all had a lot of fun, although I was feeling the effects the next day. Im glad we could get together and do something for a good cause, too.

ROB DYRDEK SIGNS THREE-YEAR DEAL WITH DC WITH ADDED BENEFITS

L to R: Rob at his TF and Colin, Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park), and Rob in San Diego.
Rob Dyrdek has just signed for another three years as a pro at DC, but hes committed more than just his skating and likeness. Busy filming for the DC video, and right on the heels of starting his own board company, the new contract sees Rob maintaining his amazing level of skateboarding for DC. More than that, however, it gives him an executive-level consulting role in team and advertising decisions. Rob will also be designing some non-pro model shoes. We wanted more from Rob than just his representation as a pro, said DC co-founder Ken Block. He has so much to offer. He knows every angle of skating, and he has a very perceptive take on things. Im glad we were finally able to get him to commit more of his abilities. Rob is enthusiastic about his expanded role: Kens been trying to get me to commit to helping DC out with other things. Theyre giving me a great opportunity to focus on design, so Im hyped." Click here to see what Rob has to say about a recent filming trip to Miami and other career changes.

The last two months have been busy ones and it all began with the Tampa Am. Toy Machine ripper Caswell Berry took home the goods, with plenty of Feeble and Smith grinds to go around. Coming in second was young Danny Cerezini, representing for Flip. Third and fouth went to Illenium team members Austen Seaholm and Greg Lutzka. Seaholm has been on a tear lately, winning his second Vans World Amateur Skateboarding Championship earlier this month. Lutzka was shredding everthing in his path in Tampa and doing it all with lots of speed. Look out for this kid, I saw him last year at The Sound and the Fury in Seattle and it was obvious that he was ready to break out, so this is probably just the beginning.

In Alien Workshop news, Anthony Pappalardo is now on the team full time and will have some pro decks in stores soon. To go along with those, AWS has several new graphics lines out for their riders, just in time for spring. Check them out at the Alien site.

The new Alien/Habitat training facility in Philly is finished and is being worked over by O'Connor, Wenning, Pappalardo, Getz, Pluhowski, Kalis and the rest of the Philly crew.

Brian Wenning also scored the last Transworld cover with his switch backside 180 over the fountain gap at Love Park. There is also a two-page Habitat ad with the sequence in the same issue. Now everyone has the photos to go with the rumors.

In other big news, another ASR trade show is in the books and all of the heads were in attendance. Emerica was showing the teaser to their new video, "This is Skateboarding". Most of the Emerica riders had spots, but don't expect too much till the premier.

Flow master Chris Senn is back from entertaining the crowds at the Asian X Games in Malaysia. Senn was not only destroying it in the park, but he also moved over to show off his vert skills as well. Next stop: Australia for some shooting with the team.

Speaking of style, Bob Burnquist, Rick McCrank, Eric Koston and Arto Saari all got together to film a documentary called Technical Feature on the process of designing their pro shoes for eS. In the video the riders explaing how they helped to design the shoe, all the way from the choice of materials to how the style came about. The video premiered at ASR and the interviews should be on the eS site soon.

Rick McCrank has been a busy man of late, he just won the Globe World Cup event down in Australia, edging out Kerry Getz. Rick is also working on completing his own skate shop in Vancouver, named "Anti-Social". The shop should be up and running in time for Slam City Jam in May.

In other big news, Tom Penny will be moving out to Huntington Beach, CA sometime soon and he has finished up his part for the new Flip video, which should be out in April.

Also finishing up filming is Eric Koston this time for the new Girl video which will hopefully be out in June.

Finishing off the movie/video theme, Sony Pictures Classics and Vans are putting on a big old contest for the theatrical release of "Dogtown and Z-Boys". They are giving away $14,000 worth of prizes so go to www.dogtownmovie.com and get your share.

And a final congratulations to Arto Saari on being named skater of the year by Thrasher
